Zubop
London-based Zubop is a seven-member ensemble (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, flute, saxes, trumpet, valve trombone, marimba, electric bass, drums, percussion) whose all-original repertoire draws upon salsa, samba, ska, reggae, jazz, blues, rock, funk, African (North, East, South and West), and Asian dance rhythms. A (well-rehearsed) jam band for all seasons, they run in a popular vein, as heard on ZubopGambia, recorded live at Ronnie Scott's in early 2003. Joining in, and really shaping the sound of the performance, are Gambian artists Juldeh Camara, a first-rate Fula singer who also plays nyanyeru (one-string violin) and calabash, and Njega Sohna (vocals, djembe, percussion). - Michael Stone
