Slaid Cleaves
Wishbones
Philo (www.rounder.com)

Slaid Cleaves is a one story telling fool. He can pick it up on "an old dirt road just off Route 9" and take you winding up, down and around. In all four directions and six ways from Sunday. Or spin a bottle and take a shot, or jump into the middle of a book about a great racehorse, or begin a confession: "I'm not living like I should . . . ". But be sure of one thing: he'll pull you into the tale and you'll be glad of it.

Cleaves has travelled a long way from his Downeast Maine roots to his adopted Texas home, and the road has given him friends and stories, indeed. And some of those pals, like Texas honkytonk guru Ray Wylie Hubbard, songsmith Rod Picott and greasy-roots producer/guitarist Gurf Morlix join in for the ride on Wishbones.

This is a fine collection of songs about all manner of things: horses, divorces, boxers and bottles. And a lot more than that. Damn fine music, too. Slaid Cleaves has hit his groove, and a wild, rolling one at that. Listen to this guy. He has a hell of a lot to say. - Bill Nevins
