Tim Sparks Tanz means "dance" in Yiddish, and this collection of guitar versions of music from the far reaches of the Jewish diaspora is, indeed, a wonderful dance. Tim Sparks mixes Klezmer songs like "Fifteen Years Aways From Home" with Yemeni, Sephardic and Dagestani tunes. The effect is fascinating. Sparks is supported by Greg Cohen on bass and Cyro Baptista, percussion. Together, this trio gives us subtle, intricate music that rewards repeated listenings with its diverse flavors. Ranging from the Persian feeling of the Judaeo-Kurdish "Hila Wasa" to the bittersweet jazz harmonies of the Sephardic gem, "La Rosa Enflorece," this CD provides a joyful revelation of the grand variety that is Jewish music around the world. - Bill Nevins
