cd cover Kunsertu was a band from Sicily that released a couple of albums in the late 80's. Obviously inspired by North African music, this cd reminds me a lot of Dissidenten's early work. The same ingredients are here: the steady dance rhythms, the exotic-sounding vocals, the bright synth backing. Most of the soloing is handled by Stefano Foresta on tenor sax, which adds a nice acoustic element to the electronic mix.

Most of the songs, although there is some textural variety, chug along at whatever the fashionable bpm rate was at the time. The one exception is "Mokarta," which slows the pace and shows for the only time a trace of Italian influence, mostly in the vocals. Although not unique, Kunsertu had an intriguing sound which I imagine was not shared by other Italian bands of their time, and it would be interesting to hear if any of their influence has survived. - Joe Grossman
