The History

Almost 20 years ago, at the dawn of internet time, RootsWorld went online as what I believe was the first magazine of its kind, a purely electronic publication. As it grew, I began to call it a sharezine, an homage to my many years as a volunteer DJ at various non-commercial radio stations. RW is free and open to all, access permitted at all times. It's just seems like the right way to do it.

As RootsWorld grew over the years, it has evolved - growing and shrinking and growing again. It has been a series of experiments. Some failed, some struggled and survived. It has always been about quality, not quantity. We do not publish more, we publish more thoughtfully. We tell you about things we find interesting, important or inspiring, not what's hot this week. We do not flood you with content (I have never grown accustomed to that phrase) - we send you good reading and listening, only when we have it to send you - no filler, no artificial sweeteners. The volunteers who contribute to RootsWorld are free to tell you what they think - to enlighten you, not to please an advertiser, a record label, an artist or a publicist. They write with passion, with spirit, with wit and with intelligence.

The Pitch

I am asking you, as I do twice a year, to lend me a hand. The internet is awash in "free information" (you can judge it as you will for value) delivered in short tidbits amid a sea of visual flotsam, bobbling over the screen as you read. I have desperately tried to avoid the pop-up advertising culture of the internet, to make RootsWorld a better place to read.

So, the pitch is pretty simple:
RootsWorld - I cannot do it without your support.
