Mose Fanfan
Mose Fanfan has been making smooth Congolese rumba for decades now. This latest effort doesn't break any new ground, but is a satisfying listen. He and his band have a seamless flow to their sound that makes this collection of Fanfan compositions imminently danceable. There are no surprises or gimmicks here - just firmly grounded traditional rumba. Fanfan's lead guitar work rolls like a river. Francis Fuster's percussion sparkles and pops underneath it all. Six vocalists are listed in the credits, including Fanfan's mother Madeka. Fanfan is democratic about giving each vocalist a chance to shine. This variation in vocal timbre keeps things from becoming monotonous. The high, sweet female vocal on "Lipopo Ville" is especially charming. Unfortunately, the liner notes don't indicate who sings on which tracks. In fact the liner notes give scant information overall, beyond a couple of sketchy biographical paragraphs in English and French and a transcription of the Congolese lyrics. Still, this is a minor nitpick that shouldn't interfere with the enjoyment of this appealing, unaffected set of dance music. - Peggy Latkovich
