Murphy Campbell
But so is this digital EP. Four songs, an initial showcase for someone new in the old-time American music firmament. With roots so deep in North Carolina that they wrap around the bedrock, she’s an outstanding talent. Helped out by a few good friends in the recording, with “Fair And Tender Ladies” – where she plays and sings harmony – a real highlight. With a carefully aged black and white photo on a cover that looks like an old embroidered sampler, this plays up the history behind the music.
Everything is good, though. Campbell is a powerhouse on the banjo, not flashy or virtuoso, but with a natural feel for this music. It courses through her veins. She possesses a great, rare talent – and maybe the ambition to push it along. The note was right, there are all kinds of things to like about this. She’s starting out. Get in on the ground floor.
