"Rwenzori"
While Whelan is a well known traditional player, he is no stranger to experimentation and exploration. On Flirting With The Edge John brought together his core band of Liz Knowles (fiddle), Robin Bullock (guitars, cittern) and Tom Wetmore (bass) and an unusual cast of guest artists including Bernadette Peters, Connie Dover, Pat Kilbride and Sirius String Quartet.

This track features a kalimba by Ugandan musician Samite Mulondo, who also gave the song its name. That hot latin guitar solo is from Oscar Lopez. There are colors of central Africa, Latin rhythm and Irish soul all wrapped around a simple musical phrase and a whole lot of energy. It's what happens when worlds collide.

You can also hear an interview and some traditional Irish tunes from John,
recorded live for the festival
