Sam Mangwana
Mangwana's recent recordings have explored a more varied, acoustic sound in the production, and this one follows suit with its emphasis on multiple acoustic guitars, real percussion, accordions, violins and horns. There are few voices like his in the world, and this kind of a setting just emphasizes the warm, honey-soaked delivery he offers. Cantos de Esperança loads on the Latin roots that made "Mangwana-style Congolese music" a hit all over Africa, and all you need to hear is his reworking of the magnificent "Faty" to hook you completely. - CF
