"More Africa" is something this CD could have used. Producer, engineer, mixer and multi-instrumentalist Andrew McPherson, who does most of the work here, wants to have it both ways, making music that's rooted yet modern, structured yet trippy. More Africa In Us isn't 100% awful, but it comes perilously close. Recognizably African sounds are laid across sampled beats and sprinkled with shopworn effects to create semi-songs that range from okay to unrelentingly annoying. A few offerings, like the rai-tinged "Mongolia on the Line," show that McPherson is a man of obvious talent and vision. Now all he needs is to put them to better use. - Tom Orr
