Flying Bulgar Klezmer Band

Traditional Crossroads (www.traditionalcrossroads.com)

cd cover The Canadian-based Flying Bulgars are one of the young groups attempting to create a new type of Jewish music reflective as much of American music as that of classic klezmer style.

Most of the music is composed by band members and six of the fourteen pieces are Yiddish vocals. The latter have the sound of Yiddish theater and Israeli styles. The lyrics come from various non-band sources. The vocalist, David Wall has a very intense delivery, even on celebratory songs. Some cuts are aggressively experimental, mixing in jazz (including some "free" wailing solos) and pop techniques. Not all the fusions work, but my sense is that the FBK Band is still searching for their sound. I look forward to future growth.- Stacy Phillips
