This ensemble of piano, clarinet, accordion, violin, bass guitar and percussion is a combination that you don't often find playing traditional music. But it creates a warm, orchestral sound that fits the songs and themes (both composed and traditional) very well. Although those compositions are not very original unto themselves,

the instrumentation makes them fresh, sexy and at times, quite pensive. Tango, Eastern European melodies, Russian folklore (with emphasis on folklore), the pop end of classical music, the American Charleston and Italian neotraditional are all echoed in this stylistically diverse yet musically unified record.

The compositions of Naïra Mnoian are based on Armenian and Hungarian melodies with Armenian, French and Russian lyrics, and this Belgian band shows how you can find interesting music in even the most unexpected places. Mnoian emerges from this recording as a real talent and an artist to watch out for in the future. - Nondas Kitsos
