An Dóchas
Rise
An Dochas (www.andochas.com)

Spokane, Washington is a long way from Ireland, yet the members of An Dóchas are in tune with traditional Irish music. This sextet gives the listener plenty of familiar melodies from the fiddle, whistle, uilleann pipes, and banjo. They are also happy to show off the electric guitar, to experiment with samples as background for the pipes, or to keep time with both the bodhran and a full drum kit. These diversions are short-lived and tastefully done, encouraging smiles and heads nodding in agreement with their choices.

The strongest tracks still are the traditional session tunes. The reels "The Silver Spear/Dr. Gilbert's/The Morning Dew" and the jigs "The Trip to Sligo/The King of the Pipers" are the standouts here. While their earlier records portrayed An Dóchas as an amiable bar band, Rise shows off a group of young Americans who have matured, producing satisfying and crowd-pleasing new Irish music. - Greg Harness
