Free Reed Radio 2001
Here's a list of radio programs that will feature the accordion this month. Some are on the air and on the 'net, some are just one or the other. Links are provided when we have them.

Remember to note where the program is coming from, so you can figure your local time. I have installed a little "world clock" for you to compute time zones.

June 23, The Global Village: CBC Radio, Canada 7-8 PM (Eastern Time)
Accordionist Maria Kalaniemi sends in a postcard for the Free Reed Festival online (along with a lot of other great muical adventures!) Check for schedules for the show.

We are awaiting confirmation of specific dates and times from a number of other stations, so check back on this web page throughout the month.

May 31, Tuesday: The early edition, pre-festival show, just to warm you up.
William Bain presents 'Accordéons (histoires d'anches libres)/Accordeons (free reed stories)' on his program on CFFF, Trent Radio in Ontario Canada. On the air at 92.7 FM and on the net via the CFF web site. The program will air from 08:00-11:00 AM (Eastern Time)

June 3, Sunday: WWUH, Hartford CT
From 6-9 AM Eastern Time Brian Grosjean will play a mix of traditional and modern free reed music, mostly from Eastern Europe, South America and Scandinavia, with a few surprises mixed in. Visit his website for info on the day of the show, and listen in at WWUH.org.

June 4, Monday: Zoetek Radio will present a continuous broadcast of accordion music throughout the day. Here are just some of the artist you can hear on this special all-day Zoetek show: Dominguinhos, Sivuca & Chiquinho do Acordeon, Maria Kalaniemi & Aldargaz, Pekka Lehti, Ben Folds Five, Buckwheat Zydeco, Armando Hernandez Y Su Conjunto, Queen Ida, Ipiki Nefosholo, Farmers Market, Ozomatli, Wayne Toups & Zydecajun, Khaled, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Evan Lurie, Ned Ludd, Los Lobos, The Wallets, Brave Combo, Tin Hat Trio, Luis Gonzaga & Elba Ramalho, Kepa Junkera, and a whole lot more.

June 4, Monday: Radio Planet 3 on WPKN, Bridgeport CT, USA
Cliff Furnald will present 4 hours of accordions from around the world, including many recordings made especially for the festival, or recorded on location in various places. 89.5 FM in CT and NY and on the internet via the WPKN web site from 2PM to 6PM Eastern Time.

June 6, Wednesday: CiTR, British Columbia
Each Wednesday in June accordion artists from North America and beyond will be featured along with regularly-scheduled eclectic roots programming of Vancouver's "Folk Oasis". Tune in at 9 pm (Pacific time) to CiTR at 101.9 FM in southwestern British Columbia, or live on the Internet.

June 9, Saturday: Saturday Polka Party WRTC 89.3 FM in Hartford, CT, USA
11:30 am to 2:30 pm Eastern Time
John Jeski will present "Accordion Polkas, a special segment from 12 noon to 1pm (see also: on demand shows)

June 13, Wednesday: CiTR, British Columbia
Folk Oasis will feature free reeds throughout the show, from North America and beyond. Tune in at 9 pm (Pacific time) to CiTR at 101.9 FM in southwestern British Columbia, or live on the Internet.

Friday June 15, Melbourne, Australia
2am - 6am (Australian Eastern Standard Time)
Not an ideal time for locals, apart from insomniacs and shift workers (of whom there are quite a few, mind), but Folkal Point, Lloyd Brady's program on 106.7 PBS FM, in Melbourne will be concentrating on Celtic accordion, with a touch of Quebec and Cajun styles as well.

Friday: June 15, Minnesota, USA
6 - 11 AM, Central Time: 2 shows! 5 hours!
DJ Blanche Fubar will offer some special performances (live and recorded) on KFAI 90.3 & 106.7 FM, Minneapolis-St. Paul and on the 'net. You'll hear local accordion goddess Dee Langley play live, plus some concert material from Maria Kalaniemi and other accordion gods and goddessses the world over, and maybe an accordion relative or two. And stay tuned for more accordion sounds from South Louisiana, and probably a joke or two about freeing this guy named Reed, on Louisiana Rhythms, from 9 to 11 AM.

June 16, Saturday: Zoetek Radio will present a continuous broadcast of accordion music throughout the day. Roots and Wings, hosted by Philly Markowitz, will present a festival special including new releases from 2 accordion-weilding Canadian groups: Swamperella (Cajun, n'est pas?) and Beyond the Pale featuring Sasha Luminsky (klezmer with a hint of newgrass). Also a tribute to the late Boozoo Chavis. More details will follow soon. The show is broadcast in Toronto at 5:05 PM. Check the CBC web site for internet radio links and FM broadcast times across Canada and around the world.

June 17, Sunday. Melbourne, Australia:
The Global Village (with presenter and tourist guide Roger Holdsworth) joins the Free Reed Festival and showcases the world of accordions, melodeons etc. We'll squeeze in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Finland ... and Australia, of course, with some great home-grown players. The program airs 3 to 5 pm on PBS-FM 106.7, Melbourne on his Australia Global Village program. Also available on the internet live.

June 18, Monday: Another edition of Radio Planet 3 on WPKN, Bridgeport, CT, USA

On Demand, On the 'Net
These shows will be available starting June 4th unless otherwise noted.

RootsWorld Radio will present a regularly updated stream of music for the accordion the entire month, with links to reviews, interviews and articles about the music.

Rob Weisberg is providing an archived show from his WFMU program Transpacific Sound Paradise that features an interviewwith and performance by Yuri Lemeshev (in Real Audio).

Judith Gennett will also present a RootsWorld hosted program, of world-accordions at RootsWorld Radio

Derk Richardson has archived one of his KPFA shows, Free the Accordions! which explores free reeds on the fringe, and features Those Darn Accordions, Dino Saluzzi, Amy Denio, Swap, Guy Klucevsek, Andrea Parkins, David Slusser, Miss Murgatroid and more.

John Jeski presents The Internet Polka Party's "Accordion Special Edition."
