Denio has been operating her own Spaciouser Spoot Studios since 1981, and has enjoyed working & playing with musicians & artists from Japan, India, England, The Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Sicily, Spain, Bosnia, Serbia, Bulgaria, Russia, Estonia, and throughout North America. She helped found The Entropics, Tone Dogs, Billy Tipton Memorial Saxophone Quartet, Naked Slime Duo, Petunia, and has been guest vocalist with Curlew, George Cartwright, The Science Group (Stevan Tickmayer/Chris Cutler/Fred Frith/Bob Drake, etc), and Kultur Shock.
Though mainly self-taught, Denio was sponsored by Jazz India in 1997 to study Hindusthani devotional singing in Bombay with Dhanashree Pandit Rai. In April, 2001, she was Rosencranz Artist In Residence at Mills College in Oakland, California. She has taught workshops on improvisation and composition in Italy, Austria, and in the US, and recently taught at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.
In 1997 she received the Bessie Award (NYC) for her soundtrack to David Dorfman Dance's "Sky Down", and she composed the music for his piece "To Lie Tenderly", which was part of the Next Wave 2000 Series at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, which has been performed in many other venues in the U.S.
Her soundtrack for "Pangaea's Brood" by Thomas Edward helped the film win "Best Animated Film" at the 1997 New York Underground Film Festival. Her music was included in the John Cage Retrospective at the Biennale di Venezia. Other commissions include music for Italian National Radio, the Berkeley Symphony, The New York Festival of Song, Relache Ensemble, Pat Graney Dance Company, the chamber octet Die Knodel (Austria), Run/Remain Ensemble, UMO Ensemble, and Lorenzo Pickle.
