Music from Finding Anyplace by Ozere
This quintet from Canada released Finding Anyplace in September of 2015, and the moment I listened, I was struck by how both familiar and original their music was. The compositions and songs have clear roots in folk traditions, but an equally strong affinity with classical and modern art music - think Penguin Cafe Orchestra, The Henrys or Spiro. Led by violinist and vocalist Jessica Deutsch, the ensemble gracefully bridges the gap between new and old. Finding Anyplace spans a lot of aural territory, so one song was not going to be enough to demonstrate what they offer. I chose two from the CD to share with RootsWorld's readers, and asked Jessica to tell us a little more about them. "I wrote "Anyplace" while listening to the Kronos Quartet and music from Turkey. I tried out some alternate tunings on the violin and came up with the melody. It goes into an almost classical section, with the addition of beautiful marimba. It's my favourite track on the album, because it brings together so many of my musical influences"
"The Sun Ain't Down" was inspired by a line a fellow passenger uttered on an airplane ride: 'It's amazing how dark it gets when you go underground.' We were talking about living in basements in crowded cities. I live in Toronto, and wish I could spend more of my time out of the city, so this songs puts words to that yearning."
