"Rebetiko"
A film written, produced, and directed by Thomas Künstler
An atmospheric video inspired by love, and love for rembetiko music.

Thomas Künstler was born in Rome 1991.
He studied film production in England at UCA Farnham.

Thomas writes:
My passion for film started with stop motion animation when I was 14. Stop motion has always been therapeutic for me, as every time I was feeling bad or heartbroken, I was doing a video, converting all the bad in something “beautiful”, giving shape to my emotion. While studying in England I shared the house with 2 Greek friends from Athens. There I had my very first encounters with Greek culture and was introduced to Greek music by artists from Roza Eskenazi to Imam Baildi. I fell in love with the music and the culture. In this arch of period I learned to speak Greek, thanks to the hours spent listening to the music.

About the video

I made this video in the Spring. I uploaded it on Vimeo, but I never shared it, so no one saw it.

I filmed it in 4 nights in a big rush without any particular pretense. I made it so quickly because I planned to go from Rome to Athens on foot - 45 days (Rome to Bari and Patra to Athens, walking all the way).

The video was made for a girl; this explains the theme. Nevertheless, she never cared so I shared it anyway, because it was something that I put a lot of passion, feelings and work into. For the video, I was mainly inspired by the music itself, as well as by the famous film "Rembetiko" by C. Ferris, as well as pictures of the rembetiko era that I saw here and there. - T.K.
